Here we will highlight some of the most picturesque beach towns that are easily accessible by Amtrak, showcasing their unique attractions, outdoor activities, and the stunning coastal views that await you at each destination.


Of course the big cities like Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco all have their own amazing beaches, but this post is focused on the smaller beach towns with slower paced vibes. These towns are either directly served by Amtrak train or connecting bus, making them easy to reach and get around without a car.

Solana Beach, California

If you are going to pick on destination from this list we suggest Santa Barbara. It’s the perfect mix of beach, walkable downtown, and easy accessibility to the train station. It’s also served by both the Coast Starlight and frequent Pacific Surfliner trains, making it easy to reach from San Francisco or Los Angeles.

These neighboring towns are known for their classic beach town atmosphere, fresh seafood, and outdoor adventure opportunities. The Pacific Surfliner stops at the Grover Beach station, making it an easy and picturesque train trip from Los Angeles. If coming from the North on the Coast Starlight you will need to disembark in San Luis Obispo and connect to a bus to reach Pismo and Grover beaches.

As with Monterye and Carmel, trains do not directly serve Santa Cruz, travelers can take the train to San Jose’s Diridon Station and connect via bus or rental car for a scenic ride over the Santa Cruz Mountains.
